LongmanDictionaryofEnglishIdioms(p.28)上對這條諺語的解釋是"Therelationshipbetweenpeopleofthesamefamilyisstrongerthanotherrelationships”因此,這則諺語似可以借用漢語中一句俗語“親不親一家人”來譯更能表達出“屬于同一血緣關系的一家人比別人更親近一些”的寓意。

語言是文化的表現形式。諺語同文學作品、詩歌一樣是語言的精華。英語諺語是富于色彩的語言形式,一般具有生動形象、喻義明顯、富于哲理的語言特征。在一定程度上,英語諺語反映了英語民族的文化特點。因此,翻譯英語諺語時,僅僅以語言之間詞匯的同義性(等價性)為前提,尋求對等的表現是不夠的。譯者須較多運用漢語的表現手段,力求能再現英語諺語的語言風格和豐富內涵。只有多注意英語諺語字面以外所特有的語言內涵色彩,才能使譯文諷喻得當,宜于說理,又不失原來諺語所具有的語言形象。

某些英語諺語和漢語成語、俗語在表現形式和含義方面是一致的或基本一致的。漢譯這些英語時,可惜用與其喻義相同或相近的成語或諺語及俗語直接對譯。這樣不但可以比較好地保持原文的神韻和形式,又使譯文易于為讀者或聽者接受。如:

Pridecomesbeforeafall.驕兵必敗。

Amissisasgoodasamile,差之毫厘,失之千里。

Twoiscompany,butthreeisnone。兩個和尚抬水吃,三個和尚無水吃。

Wallshaveears。隔墻有耳。

有些英語諺語雖然在語言習慣和文化背景方面和其相對的漢語諺語之間存在著某些差異,而且所比喻的事物并不一樣,但他們的喻義卻相互吻合,而且表達方式也很相似,漢譯這些英語諺語時,常常需要“易其形式,存其精神”,即采用形象近似的漢語成語意譯。這樣可使譯文既喻義明顯,又含而不露,且可再現原文所具有的語言效果,容易達意。如:

有些英語諺語意在言外,語言含蓄,寓意深刻。如果僅從字面意義直譯成漢語,而不領會原文的具體含義及其效果,譯文勢必平淡無味。這樣既不能表達意思,又有損于原文的語言形象和豐富內涵。因此,在翻譯時,應在漢語中尋找那些與原文喻義相同或效果相似的成語、諺語或俗語來表達,則會使譯文形象生動,準確達意。試比較下列各譯例。

Onecannotmakeanomeletwithoutbreakingeggs。如譯成“想吃煎蛋卷,就得打雞蛋”,不如譯成工“有得必有失”。或甚至可以引申為“不破不立”。

如果所要翻譯的諺語喻義清新,形象逼真,按其字面直譯其意,就能表達出原文的喻義來,則可直譯。這樣做既能較完整地保存原文的表達方式,且又可豐富我們自己的語言文化,一舉兩得,請看下面的譯例。
